Sunscreen myths: why tanning happens even on cloudy days
Your skin can darken indoors, in the shade and under cloud. Here is what actually protects it.
Why it happens
UVA rays pass through clouds and window glass and trigger melanin, the pigment that causes tanning and dark spots. Indian skin has more melanin, so marks appear easily and fade slowly.
What works
Broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on face, neck and hands every morning, reapplied every 2 to 3 hours outdoors. Add a hat or dupatta and shade at midday.
Common mistakes
Using too little (about two finger-lengths for face and neck is advised), skipping it indoors near windows, or relying on makeup alone.
See a doctor if
Dark patches are spreading, itchy, or not fading. Avoid strong home remedies such as lemon or toothpaste, which can burn the skin.
